Navigation Drawer
The navigation drawer is a panel that transitions in from the left edge of the screen and displays the app’s main navigation options.
Displaying the navigation drawer
Creating a Navigation Drawer
The user can bring the navigation drawer onto the screen by swiping from the left edge of the screen or by touching the application icon on the action bar.
Dismissing the navigation drawer
When the navigation drawer is expanded, the user can dismiss it in one of four ways:
Touching the content outside the navigation drawer
Swiping to the left anywhere on the screen (including edge swipe from right)
Touching the app icon/title in the action bar
Pressing Back
Now we will see how we can start using this in our code.
At first you have to create a layout for the main page.
activity_main.xml
<!-- A DrawerLayout is intended to be used as the top-level content view using match_parent for both width and height to consume the full space available. --> <android .support.v4.widget.DrawerLayout xmlns:android="http://schemas.android.com/apk/res/android" android:id="@+id/drawer_layout" android:layout_width="match_parent" android:layout_height="match_parent" > <!-- As the main content view, the view below consumes the entire space available using match_parent in both dimensions. --> <framelayout android:id="@+id/content_frame" android:layout_width="match_parent" android:layout_height="match_parent"></framelayout> <!-- android:layout_gravity="start" tells DrawerLayout to treat this as a sliding drawer on the left side for left-to-right languages and on the right side for right-to-left languages. The drawer is given a fixed width in dp and extends the full height of the container. A solid background is used for contrast with the content view. --> <listview android:id="@+id/left_drawer" android:layout_width="240dp" android:layout_height="match_parent" android:layout_gravity="start" android:background="#111" android:choiceMode="singleChoice" android:divider="@android:color/transparent" android:dividerHeight="0dp"></listview> </android>
Now the layout for the row in the listitem in the drawer panel
drawer_list_item.xml
<textview xmlns:android="http://schemas.android.com/apk/res/android" android:id="@android:id/text1" android:layout_width="match_parent" android:layout_height="wrap_content" android:textAppearance="?android:attr/textAppearanceListItemSmall" android:gravity="center_vertical" android:paddingLeft="16dp" android:paddingRight="16dp" android:textColor="#fff" android:background="?android:attr/activatedBackgroundIndicator" android:minHeight="?android:attr/listPreferredItemHeightSmall"></textview>
This is the layout for the fragment in which we are showing the contents when the drawer list is clicked.
fragment_planet.xml
<imageview xmlns:android="http://schemas.android.com/apk/res/android" android:id="@+id/image" android:layout_width="match_parent" android:layout_height="match_parent" android:background="#000000" android:gravity="center" android:padding="32dp"></imageview>
I am storing an array in the strings.xml.
<resources> <string name="app_name">Navigation Drawer Example</string> <string -array name="planets_array"> <item>Mercury</item> <item>Venus</item> <item>Earth</item> <item>Mars</item> <item>Jupiter</item> <item>Saturn</item> <item>Uranus</item> <item>Neptune</item> </string> <string name="drawer_open">Open navigation drawer</string> <string name="drawer_close">Close navigation drawer</string> <string name="action_websearch">Web search</string> <string name="app_not_available">Sorry, there\'s no web browser available</string> </resources>
Our layout ans string resources are complete.
Now the activity that is holding the drawer and implementing it.

What if i have display .xml file while clicking instead of images?
I am trying to populate fragment with SimpleCursorAdapter data based on DrawerList selection. I am getting a NPE when I set the adapter

Hey,
Could you please show me how to get the back-button to navigate to the previous fragment. Currently it’s just exiting the app. Spent hours trying to figure this out, any help would be appriciated!
Thanks
While adding fragment just do a addtoBackStack(“optional_string_key_for_frag) to the transaction. Then you can go to prev fragment by hitting the back button.
